Last time I checked running netflix on the raspi was a huge pain in the ass but I'm sure there's also content or apps you might want to run that don't support the chromecast. Raspi gives you more options in terms of direct control.Īlso depending on what content you want to play you'll need to make sure your device supports it. The big decision you need to make is how would you rather control your device? Chromecast requires either a smart mobile device or computer to cast with and doesn't use any IR remotes. I've always found the raspi XBMC releases a little clunky, especially in comparison to Chromecast but I'm sure some diehards here might debate me on that. Get the Chromecast if all you want to do is to watch things on your TV. So, what should you choose? Get the Raspberry Pi if you want something to tinker with and do not expect it to work all the time, if at all. You can watch Youtube videos and listen to music with Play Music, but that is about it. Now, there are Chromecast "emulators" such as Leapcast, but that does not work very well in my experience.

It works incredibly well for movies, TV shows and the likes, but that's about it (on the Pi at least). Even something like Youtube is a hassle to browse though in my opinion. I am not saying XBMC is bad, it is amazing, but services like Netflix will not work.

Sure, you can install XBMC and watch your library from there, but that limits you to what XBMC is capable of. In terms of pure media consumption, the Pi is not very good. You get the Raspberry Pi if you want to tinker with something and learn new stuff. You find the content on your phone / tablet / PC, and you push it to the TV, no hassle. The appeal of the Chromecast is that it is extremely easy to use as a media consumption device. ProTube isn’t cheap, coming in at R60 on iTunes, but consider this if you want an alternative to the official app.I don't think the Raspberry Pi and the Chromecast are comparable. The app delivers 4K playback, 60fps support, audio/background playback and ad-free functionality. But what if you want an app with more features?įortunately, there’s ProTube, being a paid app with oodles of functionality. ProTubeĪpple’s iOS platform enjoys Google support with an official YouTube app.

Tubecast is another cool app, offering the usual viewing experience and YouTube account functionality. In any event, FireTube is one of the few audio-only YouTube apps on Android. If there is one disadvantage though, it’s that the app seems to buffer quite often. Yep, FireTube is a handy alternative to YouTube Red, which isn’t even available in South Africa anyway. Why would they do that? Well, FireTube delivers audio-only playback. Google dumped a ton of alternative YouTube apps from the Play Store over the past few years, with FireTube being one of them. In other words, if you want to text buddies on WhatsApp while watching fail videos, this app is for you. But play a video and you’re presented with a pop-out window, allowing you to resize the window, drag it around and fold it back into the app. Much like the previous entry, the UI and presentation largely feel like a mobile website. Floating TubeĪnother notable third-party YouTube app on Android, Floating Tube takes the concept of floating video players to a level beyond that of the stock app. Yes, YouTube does the same thing now, but TubeMate allows you to keep them for as long as you want - and almost any video can be downloaded. Hardly a reason to download the app, then.īut its best feature is the ability to download videos via the app, with the ability to choose from various quality options. One of the most popular apps not available on the Play Store, TubeMate is effectively a wrapper for the mobile website.
In any event, for those wanting something a little different, here are a few alternative YouTube apps worth looking at. It’s not perfect now, but it definitely gets the job done well enough.
